CAN YOU RELATE?

You know book clubs can create an authentic reading and discussion experience for your students.

But it seems like a logistical nightmare.

  • You have no idea how to set them up.
  • You're not sure of the best way to put students into groups.
  • You don't know what books to give your students.
  • Then once you put them into groups... you don't know what kind of work to give your students.
  • You're not sure how to hold them accountable
  • You don't know how to keep them motivated and engaged...
  • ... let alone having deep, meaningful conversations
  • And then how do you make it fit in with your curriculum and align to standards
  • Or how do you assess them or make sure to meet with each group?
  • And do you really need to meet with every group?

I've been there...

In fact, one time I had such a terrible experience with book clubs in my middle school ELA classroom that my solution was to not try book clubs again for a year.

SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE!

You feel like you've tried every variation to make them work... or you're too scared to even try.

  • A version where you put them into groups of book clubs and they have assigned jobs and worksheets each week.
  • Or maybe you tried to let them have a lot more control to make it more authentic only to have them not read... let alone have meaningful discussions.
  • Or you might be like I was after my first attempt in my middle school ELA classroom.. and have been too afraid to try again at all.
What if you could implement book clubs that are successful?
With The Book Clubs in a Box Workshop you'll have everything you need to:

Create a book club or literature circle set-up that works for you and your students.

I'm going to be honest. Book clubs and literature circles are not one-size-fits-all.

You have to figure out what makes sense for you and your students... and honestly your sanity.

I'll show multiple variations of book clubs or literature circles. And I'll give you the resources to implement each version.

Create a book club logistics, facilitation, and accountability plan.

You know that book clubs can be an authentic reading experience but it doesn't happen magically.

I'll show you how to determine how you'll put students into groups.

I will have lists and explanations of what books you should use. You'll learn what work students should do.

You'll have a plan for and to facilitate the groups while holding them accountable.

Plus, I'll give you the resources for each of these elements.

Set you and your students up for success and meaningful discussion.

At their core, book clubs are meant to engage students in discussions with peers.

I'll break down strategies you can use to foster discussion among your students' groups.

We'll also dive into how to increase their independence as the year goes on.

If you want your students to be excited when you announce the next novel in class, you have to watch this workshop!

I initially enrolled in the Book Clubs in a Box Workshop because I want my kids to be excited about reading and not moan when a new novel is introduced. I was frustrated with feeling like I had to just give vocab quizzes, and comprehension questions to assess what they were reading. I didn't know what to do with the apathetic students and didn't want it to infect the whole class.

I tried a book club from what I learned in the workshop. All but one group totally thrived!!

My favorite part of the workshop was the practicality. I love everything you do. I can have fun teaching. My kids can have fun learning. Not only will kids be excited, you as the teacher will feel like you are part of your favorite book club too! And this can happen without working 80 hours a week! When I reflect on the value of this workshop compared to what I purchased it at and how much I would have paid, I am a Hub member (so the workshops are included). The monthly price seems right.

– Jen StoW

I think your workshops are wonderful and constantly check the HUB calendar to see when the next one is! I love that you stay on with us to answer all our questions.

I am a HUB member, and so happy I decided to join after attending Martina’s mentor sentences workshop in December. It is truly appreciated.

Initially enrolled in the Book Clubs in a Box Workshop because I teach middle school resource center for grades 6-8. While I don't have enough books to do book clubs yet, I was hoping to adapt the ideas presented here to small group/resource instruction.

Before the workshop, I was concerned about acquiring books, student accountability, and grading, but I definitely have had wins in my teaching or classroom as a result of what I learned in the workshop.

I wanted to move away from the traditional worksheets, and you showed me how to do that.  I also plan on incorporating more verse novels in my classroom.

My favorite part of the workshop….this is a tough one because there were a lot. I loved the book lists. I had been teaching middle school resource for 21 years, got moved to the high school--taught everything BUT ELA, then got moved back, so I love seeing the latest and greatest books for middle schoolers. The Socratic seminar was key to me because now I can "see" how you planned out your day--which brings me to the planning and pacing guides. It all makes sense to me now; the planning and pacing guides were key.  I am very visual, so I need to "see" things, once that was explained to me, I truly got it!!! You can do it too! Martina will show you how! I promise!

WORRIED THIS WON'T WORK FOR YOU?

Read what recent Workshop Attendees have said about their experience...

Every Hungry Teacher Workshop I've participated in has helped me gain valuable knowledge and a deeper understanding of what I can do to help students grow.

I initially enrolled in the Live ELA Experience Workshops because I wanted to have the summer to roll ideas around in my head since I'm moving from 7th to 6th grade.

My biggest frustrations before taking this workshop were pacing for next year and making my teaching more active and engaging.

My favorite part was how genuine and honest Martina is. She always admits none of it is perfect and focuses on making teaching better and better every day.  I'm a member, but I would have paid $250+ for all those workshops.

-CHRISSY BODSFORD

The workshop was helpful because it will help you organize the process of doing book clubs, have everything set up for you, and have you feeling confident about and not overwhelmed by doing book clubs!!

I Initially enrolled in the Book Clubs in a Box Workshop because I have been doing several book clubs this year using your resources and have been very inspired. However, because it is my first year of doing them, I felt it was important to get some “coaching,” to have the process verbally explained to me.

There are details or processes that I may have missed, and I wanted to see what my colleagues from everywhere were doing and the ideas they have.

Three of the biggest concerns or frustrations I had before I decided to invest in the workshop were kids not reading/participating, how to handle the slower readers when mixed with the fast, read-books-in-one-day readers, and how to fit everything in because 6th graders with glueing and writing are all over the place. All this and more was addressed in the workshop.

Specific wins in my teaching as a result of what I learned in the workshop.  I liked the reminder that there should always be a purpose to the reading—sometimes, due to time constraints, we just read. I also was pleased to feel I have implemented the lessons pretty well, and I was able to advise others when questions were asked in the chat. My favorite part of the workshop was hearing the process verbally was good from just my thinking I have it all down from reading.  Also, seeing what everyone else had to say was helpful and inspiring.  When I reflect on the value of this workshop compared to what I purchased it at, it was a very reasonable price!!!

If you want to increase student buy-in for book clubs and revamp your independent reading routines , then you need to check out this workshop.

I initially enrolled in the Live ELA Experience Workshop because your enthusiasm is contagious, and I wanted to feel that way about teaching again!  My biggest frustrations before taking this workshop were fitting it all in and student buy-in for book clubs.

I now have a stronger foundation for book clubs and grammar lessons, thanks to you! The content was amazing, but I loved how you would stop and answer questions the whole time.  It was clear you had your whole day dedicated to this and weren’t afraid to run over time a little.  It’s evident you pour your heart and soul into these programs, and like I said earlier… your enthusiasm is contagious! This was easily a $500+ workshop!

NICE TO MEET YOU!

I'm Martina!

During my first year of teaching middle school ELA, I tried running book clubs. I did them as I had done in my fifth and sixth-grade elementary classrooms.

It was an actual disaster.

The kids weren't reading.

No one was having focused discussions, let alone deep and thoughtful ones...

....and they were filling out their worksheets in the hallways between class periods.

I was exhausted and worn down after week one.

It almost made me hate book clubs.

I didn't try again for almost a year.

I had a good talk with myself and narrowed down what I wanted my students and I to get out of book clubs.

I realized that literature circles and book clubs aren't one size fits all.

I knew I couldn't do the same format with my sixth graders that I needed to do with my eighth graders.

... and I couldn't keep running them the same every quarter.

What worked in the first quarter was boring them to death in the fourth quarter.

I started adapting to what my students needed or what was working each quarter and each year.

I began to have a ton of book club and literature circle formats and variations that worked. I could use different versions when they worked best.

Even better. It also allowed me to be more flexible with the format and over time that flexibility had students participating in those "real-deal" book clubs that teachers dream of...

... the book clubs where students CHOOSE to get together to discuss something.

... the book clubs where the work is "easy" because it's a side-effect of them wanting to dig deeper into their texts.

... the book clubs where accountability is a piece of cake.

... the book clubs where group members are all cruising naturally through their books.

Now I've taken everything I've learned and packaged it up into an easy-to-follow workshop that allows you to accomplish the same thing.

Is The Book Clubs in a Box Workshop for you?
