The following literary devices are discussed throughout the escape room: characters, setting, theme, figurative language, and plot. They will also complete a close reading passage with accompanying questions and answers. These should be terms that the students are somewhat familiar with for the escape room to be an effective tool!

After students read "Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto, they will apply their learning of literary devices to four fun ELA escape room activities. This is the perfect activity to have students complete after they have done a literature unit and want to review it.

  Here's what's included:

  • 5 Escape Room Activities
  • 4 Escape Room Station Signs + Student Directions
  • Station instructions for students
  • Station Reference Materials, when applicable
  • Student response sheets
  • Answer keys

Your students will love reviewing, learning, and applying their learning about literature concepts with various middle school ELA literary activities. They'll be engaged in each literature activity and discuss the concepts with their group members.

These literary device escape room activities are 100% done and prepped for you. Decide if you'll do full color or black and white, then print your station materials. Or choose the 100% digital option. Each escape room activity is color-coded for easy organization. After you print, I recommend laminating each station, and you can use them year after year.

Prep is quick and easy... Just print the student pages, set up each escape room activity station, and you're ready for a fun and engaging class!

The literary devices in the Escape Room Activities are:
