CAN YOU RELATE?

You know that your middle schoolers need direct instruction and consistent feedback from you to improve.

But you have no idea how you're supposed to do all that and still have a life.

You want students to have daily reading and writing opportunities, but how do you assess it all?

You hate putting a ton of effort into your lessons only to feel like it does nothing to help your students improve.

When you tell your students, "Okay, get to work," you want them to... well.... work.

You'd also really like to see them love reading, engage in class discussions, participate in book clubs, and feel proud of the writing they produce.

SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE!

You feel bogged down in grading and prep, living with the Sunday scaries, all while feeling like you have nothing to show for it.

  • You have felt like your eyeballs have about fallen out on Sunday nights while searching the entire internet for engaging lessons that will get results.
  • You might be like I was in my first year, and have been surviving week by week, even though you want your ELA content to all work together.
  • Many nights spent pouring over stacks of papers to assess your student's work and provide meaningful feedback... only to watch them throw it in the trash when you hand it back.
  • You are utilizing ELA websites or worksheets that you hope will have some osmosis effect... only to have them start clicking through the lessons after a couple of weeks.
What if teaching middle school ELA could be simple and effective?
With The Hungry Teacher's Hub, you'll have everything you need to:

Implement authentic teaching practices that are best for students and teachers.

The Hub has tools to help you implement the ELA resources..

...but the true core of the Hub is designed around frameworks and methods that encourage authentic experiences for your students.

We've ensured that the Hub has PD, training, tools, and a community that walks you through implementing best teaching practices while showing you how to do it during your contract time.

We want students to be engaged readers, authentically participate in writing conferences, and apply grammar instruction to their work while you improve your work-life balance.

See results from your instructional strategies.

My middle school ELA students increased their ELA proficiency scores by 60% after just two years of implementing these instructional strategies.

Of course, test scores aren't all that matter, but we want to know that what we're doing is working. We want to see our students applying what we've taught and see them utilize our feedback.

The class period structures, unit frameworks, and instructional strategies work together to build upon each other to engage students, increase students' transferability of skills across subjects, and make your class periods more effective and efficient.

Have systems in place that allow you to leave when your contract hours end

Part of what increases students' engagement in class and what encourages students to improve so quickly are the systems we teach you to implement.

These systems are all designed to have students immediately apply their learning, allow you to give feedback, and assess effectively in class.

Not only do you go home at night and do whatever you want...

....but you also give your students daily and consistent feedback for them to apply immediately.

I WANT INSIDE THE HUB!

What I have learned from the membership has given me back time with my family. I am not consumed with trying to put together my own curriculum, which is a big win!

I love that I can get into the Hub's Facebook community group, post questions, and get real support from real people.

I initially joined the Hub because we had no curriculum for our 6-8th grade ELA, and I knew I needed something to help remove the stress of not knowing what to do. When I found the Hub, I knew I needed to try it. Before the membership, I was struggling with not having a curriculum, not knowing what exactly to teach, and finding all the resources to make sure I was covering all the standards.

My favorite part of the membership is the whole thing. The resources have been a huge blessing. My students LOVED the test review games, and I felt they really brought all the lessons together. Everything was great! I love how everything clearly outlines how to implement the resources. The guesswork was taken out. But I also love the freedom to use the resources that best suit our students. These resources are not a one-size-fits-all type of resource.

At first, because I didn't know what to expect, I had a hard time paying for the membership. But after the first few months of school and I saw how easy it made my life, it was all worth it. If you want to make your life easier and still give your students everything they need, then this is, for sure, the membership they need to get!

-LESA SEARLES

6th-8th Grade ELA Teacher

The value is well worth the cost of the membership. The workshops alone are worth the overall cost!!

I initially joined the Hub because there are few resources for middle school teachers. After reviewing your website and resources, I felt like someone finally understood what being a middle school ELA teacher is all about.

My biggest frustrations before joining The Hub was the never-ending grading, keeping students engaged and planning across 3 years of ELA with the same teacher. I have been teaching literary analysis for 15 years using Fahrenheit 451 as the text. So much of the technology exists today. But I did not have a specific plan to introduce dystopian novels until I became a member.

Is EVERYTHING an acceptable answer for what I love about The Hub? I always go to Hungry Teacher first when I need to make adjustments on current lessons or need something new.

I have yet to find a missing piece in the membership. When colleagues ask me, "Where did you find that?" I tell them about my Hub membership and everything I love about it.

You really don't need to look elsewhere for what you need.  Again, is EVERYTHING an acceptable answer for what stands out in the membership?! Finding your site is the best thing I've ever encountered. - Karen Lefebvre

-KAREN LEFEBVRE

6th-8th Grade ELA Teacher

Your resources are flexible and can be adapted easily!!

I went back into the classroom after 18 years in administrative services. I needed curriculum, direction, organizational skills, and inspiration. I attended an online conference, and The Hungry Teacher presented. I was so inspired and she had the exact tools I needed. I knew I needed to join so I could access all the wonderful resources to help me succeed.

I was frustrated with using and searching on Teachers Pay Teachers for different disconnected resources. Once I realized that I was buying from The Hungry Teacher a lot of the time, it seemed only logical to become part of the membership.

I was hesitant to pay a large sum of money and not really get my money's worth, but I have not been disappointed once.  I know that because of the resources I have gotten, I can get more time at home on the weekends with my husband. I don't spend as much time working on lesson plans and trying to create new things.

My biggest win is the interactive notebooks I have utilized in my classroom. My 6th graders still like cutting and pasting, which keeps them engaged and creative.

My absolute favorite things about the membership are the monthly resources and the credits. I use the credits to fill my toolbox. I am always pulling from one or more to help fill gaps in my curriculum or to build supplemental lessons for struggling students.

I have gotten every cent worth of materials and support for the money spent. I am a member of the Facebook group and get a lot of encouragement and ideas from it, as well.

I would especially suggest your membership to new teachers because of all the resources and benefits provided by the membership.

I WANT INSIDE THE HUB!

CHLOE BENITEZ

6th-8th Grade ELA Teacher

I barely started implementing the Hub's resources and methods, and I already see more student engagement and motivation.

I joined The Hub as a recommendation from a campus administrator from a previous campus where I used to work. Before purchasing, a teacher mentioned they had purchased some items from your shop!

I was concerned that my students were performing below grade level and my current school curriculum was too difficult for the students I was servicing. Those concerns immediately disappeared.

The Hub has so many resources that I haven't been able to get through everything! I love what I have seen and used!

In addition, I love that there is immediate feedback from Martina when needed. I am not talking to a machine, but instead an actual individual. I feel I am getting the greatest bang for my money for the value of the membership.

MORGAN PHELPS

6th-8th Grade ELA Teacher

The prep, resources, and scaffolding are unmatched. It helps me feel confident in what I am teaching and helps raise the level of rigor. I like the lack of "Googleable" answers!!!!

I teach in a very small district. I am the only ELA teacher for 6-8 grade. I found some of Martina's resources and they made life so much easier being scaffolded for all 3 grades! After finding these resources, I knew I wanted more.

I started researching the membership and discovered it was the perfect opportunity to support the resources I already had. The more resources I downloaded, the more I realized I could raise the rigor for students. I have raised the level of my students' ability to analyze a variety of texts.

Before joining, I was worried about investing in something that doesn't "go" with the materials and books I already had. I was afraid it would take me too long to go through the materials and implement them. And I was nervous I would feel like the materials weren't "authentic" to me, and I would feel like an imposter teaching with these resources. Needless to say, all of these hesitations were wrong!!

I feel that the resources scaffold perfectly while challenging students to raise their level of work on every step. I love the community. I like reading through the questions and answers. I get so many ideas and ah-ha moments reading others' questions and posts. It is amazing. I love that Martina engages in a positive manner to all feedback!

BRANDIE MCCABE

6th-8th Grade ELA Teacher

The Hub has been an asset to my teaching. I truly believe our students need a different way to learn outside of packets and this helped create conversation and a love for reading.  I love the ease!

I initially joined the Hub during my first year teaching in middle school and I loved the layout and all the extra trainings for support. I was just new and felt like a fish out of water.

I knew I didn’t love the curriculum I was handed. I have always loved book clubs and the idea of teaching through them, like Martina teaches, sparked something for me. I felt like if I had the training and background knowledge like offerend in the Hub, I would have the confidence to support my style in the classroom.

As a result of what I learned from the membership, my 7th-grade class had most students below level and low-level testing. After this year, almost all of them were close to average or above, and they all showed tremendous growth. I have loved everything in the Hub. I have used every unit set for the reading, I think, between my 7th and 8th graders. I love the poetry packets for end-of-the-year chaos. I love the trainings and the extra bit of confidence it brings to my classroom.

LESLIE SNYDER

6th Grade ELA Teacher

I love hearing you explain what I need to do to utilize the materials fully!

I have been contemplating joining The Hungry Teacher’s hub membership for MONTHS, but it wasn't until after I took the Mentor Sentence training that I actually joined. I love the workshops!

Before investing in the membership, I was concerned about whether or not there would be materials at my students' levels (they are LOW for 6th graders). Your teaching style and the fact that you want to make it usable for sixth graders stand out about your membership.

I also wasn't sure if the materials would be confusing to me or if the materials would take too much time for me to implement, but everything is explained and easy to use.

I'm eager to do the short story units and implement Socratic Seminar.  Keep giving the PD!!! I know they're self-explanatory, but hearing you explain how you used the resources and systems has been so helpful. I would recommend to others watch any of the PD workshops first, then jump in!

MELISSA ECKERT

6th Grade ELA Teacher

The support I received when I could not use my monthly credits due to a health issue validated my belief that this community is teacher-centered.

When I joined the membership, I was moving to 6th grade. I felt strongly that the sixth graders in our elementary school would benefit from being taught the way sixth graders in middle school are, so I felt The Hungry Teacher’s Hub was a perfect fit.

A major win in my classroom since joining, my students continue to score higher than their building peers in language arts! I have implemented novels more readily because of the novel studies included. Novels are always better than a basal text.  I love the interactive grammar notebook!

It moves in a logical sequence and is very grade-level appropriate. It allows me to teach the needed topics in a fun way. Otherwise, language arts can be boring.

I have loved being part of this community for the past two years! The support I received when I could not use my monthly credits due to a health issue validated my belief that this community is teacher-centered. I was thankful to have not lost what I’d paid for.

I have told my teammates about The Hungry Teacher’s Hub! I brag about my class’ interactive notebooks for language arts and novel studies.

ALICIA FIGGE

6th-8th Grade ELA Teacher

I teach a resource English class and was given no curriculum. The Hub has helped me in so many ways!!! I literally had no guidance as to what I was doing with my students.

My favorite part of the membership is receiving two credits a month. It helps teachers build their library of resources so much faster without hurting the bank. Also, I LOVE the workshops! I did the grammar workshop and loved it.  I wish you had the same resources for math!

Everything in The Hub is so well written. The value of what I pay each month is definitely worth it! I already recommended you to another teacher because she’s in the same boat I am. I told her there are standards, lesson plans, and so many things in the unit!

Compared to other memberships, the resources and format of it all standout. I’m so excited to get started back at school tomorrow!!!

NICE TO MEET YOU!

I'm Martina!

My worst year of teaching ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me...

In my most recent years of teaching middle school ELA, my students increased their volume of writing from a few sentences each day to almost two pages daily, and their reading volume went from basically nothing to finishing multiple novels during each 3-4 week unit.

Their ELA proficiency test scores increased by 50-60% proficiency in my first two years of teaching.

Despite that considerable increase in their reading and writing volume quantity and quality, I literally never brought any grading home.

But it wasn’t always this way.

Prior to teaching seventh and eighth-grade ELA, I had been in a sixth-grade ELA position that just about had me leave teaching altogether.

My sixth-grade students hated reading, produced very little writing, and had minimal stamina or motivation during our district and state tests.

I was handed a scripted curriculum to "improve student test scores," making my students HATE reading and writing more than before.

I was required to be part of a new teacher training cohort that had to submit lesson plans and would also "improve" and support my teaching when it was a time-suck that added even more work to my already-full plate.

I had triple the number of students (and grading) I'd ever experienced. My new school's plan and prep time was half of what I had in my previous school.

We were all bored, I was completely burnt out by October, and my classroom management was basically a survival-mode strategy.

I kept wishing I had a magical solution that would give me useful support and teaching resources that were engaging, flexible, practical, and helped my students improve.

If they had helped with classroom management, I would have called it the magical unicorn of teaching.

It was my toughest year of teaching, but I always say it was the best thing that ever happened to me because....

That really tough year had me creating my own resources and strategies that did all the things mentioned above. I switched jobs to a 6th-8th grade ELA position....

...And I started creating The Hub.

It has everything I wished I'd had during that really tough year. Some of it was even created during that first year, as I learned first-hand what types of resources, units, and support middle school ELA teachers needed.
