The ELA teacher membership for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELA teachers is here!

All the resources, support, differentiated for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade reading and writing units, year long grammar bundles, and snack-size trainings you need to be a successful and stress free middle school ELA teacher.

YES, I WANT THIS!

I know what it's like to...

I used to spend all my evenings and weekends grading reading responses, essays, writing paragraphs of feedback, and re-teaching based on all those assessments.... only to have to do it all over again the next week.

I used to dread Sundays because I still wasn't caught up on grading, I didn't know what I was going to teach come Monday morning... or I knew I was going to have to muster up some excitement for my scripted curriculum that my students and I both hated.

I spent my entire first year in middle school ELA lesson planning, grading, giving feedback, begging my students to read and write, and re-working lessons....  only to produce results that made it appear like nothing had been done in my classroom all year long.

I thought I was a bad teacher...

I genuinely used to ask myself: Can I really get my middle school ELA students to become critical readers and strong writers?

Is there a way I can do less prepping, planning, working, and grading and still see improvement?

Can I really get them to do all the work and actually read and write more?

I know how tough it can be to be a middle school ELA teacher prepping, planning, working, and grading, only to feel like you have nothing to show for it.... and I can totally relate to feeling completely overwhelmed by trying to do All.The.Things.

It’s exhausting.

But I want to reassure you that you CAN have lessons and units that:

🌟...are engaging because students are actually reading novels on their own....

🌟...are results-producing because students have scaffolded teaching and strong, well-written exemplars for everything they do....

🌟...create opportunities and structure that encourage students to engage in thoughtful discussions about ENGLISH CLASS....

🌟...create systems and structures that allow you to actually grade every single thing in class, so while your students are working, improving, and growing, you get to go home at night and do whatever the heck you want.

Even if you think that if you just plan better, work harder, change things up to adapt, and grade more... that you will finally get these results... I'm here to tell you, that is just not true.

The reality is STUDENTS need to be doing the work with the support of a teacher that is there to guide their discussions, support their learning, model quality work, and provide feedback so they can improve.

BUT, it isn’t as easy as just telling you to make the students do all the work while you prep less, plan less, and grade less.

The #1 reason you might not be able to plan, prep, and grade less while still getting results, is because you do NOT have the strategies and resources in place…. a problem that is 100% fixable.

Imagine you could...

HAVE ALL YOUR PLANNING AND PREPPING DONE EVERY SINGLE WEEK

Plan and prep out your year with done-for-you pacing and planning guides and curriculum maps. Or edit and adjust for your curriculum (or lack of) situation. Designed to be print-and-go or 100% flexible for your classroom.

TEACH YOUR STUDENTS IN WAYS THAT INCREASE THEIR VOLUME AND QUALITY

Implement the reading or writing unit, use the strategies shown and taught to grade/assess while students are working throughout the unit, and be FLOORED by what your 6th, 7th, and/or 8th grade ELA students produce.

HAVE AN ALL ACCESS PASS TO DONE-FOR-YOU MONTH-LONG READING, WRITING, AND GRAMMAR UNITS

Go back to your membership library and select your next month-long reading unit or month-long writing unit. Get one of your grammar units ready to go each quarter too! Rinse and repeat all year long.

NEVER BRING GRADING HOME AGAIN BECAUSE YOU GET IT ALL DONE IN CLASS

I teach you how to implement systems and structures that allow you to actually grade every single thing in class, so while your students are working, improving, and growing, you get to go home at night and do whatever the heck you want.

Before The Hungry Teacher's Hub Membership my school provides a curriculum, but it's very difficult to navigate, to change to meet my student's needs, and honestly is so huge it's overwhelming. Things are broken into topical units, rather than into skills, standards, and things that are easy to see what I can pick and choose from. The resources provided via this membership have included so many diverse options, feel less stressful and overwhelming to work through, especially with videos and supplemental things that help me see exactly how to use it. I have LOVED the community that comes with it. Having the FB group to go to when I have questions about different resources, or simply browsing to find inspiration and see how other teachers are using it has been incredible to me. It's easier for me to see another teacher in action, and then try to do the same than to just be handed bundles of materials without a bigger picture idea of how to implement them.

-Kenzie Caudill, 8th Grade ELA teacher

YES, I WANT THIS!

The Heart of the Hub: Complete Curriculums

For those who prefer a proven plan, your membership includes three fully scoped and sequenced middle school ELA curriculums.

Our Hub member favorite, Heart of the Hub Complete Curriculums are three different 9-month plans, pacing, and resources for your sixth, seventh, and eighth grade ELA classrooms.

We outline reading, writing, and grammar for the year, month, and week for the entire school-year.

Each month you can use your credits to snag the resources and units as outlined in the complete curriculums. Not only is the pacing and planning done for you, but the units and resources are too!

YES, I WANT THIS!

Before The Hungry Teacher's Hub Membership we were struggling to keep up with our pacing. My lessons were all over the place and nothing was organized but since joining I've been able to have continuity- being able to have a routine for myself and my students. I have been able to dive deeper into the curriculum and standards to align with our reading selections. I love that The Hub Membership has opened my eyes to different strategies and approaches to curriculum. I am able to meet my students needs in more ways than before.

-Amber Ramirez, 6th and 7th grade ELA teacher

In this membership, you will have everything you need to teach middle school ELA. You will never be short on resources and your monthly credits can be used on any of our 100+ (and always growing) Hub Shop resources:

📚 MONTH LONG READING UNITS...

...are genre based with 15-20 interactive notebook lessons each to teach all the middle school CCSS literature and nonfiction standards

Each genre unit was picked to encourage students to read independent novels in the same genre, offer multiple examples of reading responses that increase their reading and writing volume and quality, and to encourage discussion, critical thinking, and peer support among classmates.

The current reading units are literary devices with realistic fiction, literary devices with historical fiction, nonfiction with literary nonfiction, drama, poetry terms with verse novels, and literary devices with dystopian.

📚 NOVEL STUDIES...

The accompanying teacher novel studies and mentor text are designed based on the Socratic Seminar model of teaching students to cite text evidence about their reading, in order to foster their ability to have deep discussions that go beyond the text.

There are over 30 novel studies available in the Hub Shop and all include or are being updated to include: Daily lesson plans with answer keys and vocabulary, 10+ reading response examples, mini anchor charts or student reference pages, graphic organizers, Socratic Seminar implementation guides, display slides for guiding and interpretive questions, digital versions of notebooks, editable reading response rubrics, an small group and conference forms.

📚 READING RESOURCES...

The Hub Shop also includes resource for independent reading like First Chapter Friday resources, editable response rubrics, genre posters, reading conference forms and other mini units on specific literature and nonfiction concepts and standards.

✏️ THE WRITING UNITS....

The narrative writing unit, literary analysis writing unit, and rhetorical analysis unit were designed specifically for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELA students.

Each unit uses a scaffolded approach to give students background knowledge about each writing genre before they dive into writing.

The Hungry Teacher's Hub is already working on expository writing units for the 2022-2023 school year.

📝 THE GRAMMAR BUNDLES....

Mentor Sentences are your answer to never having boring grammar instruction again. Even better, because of the implementation and set-up of mentor sentences, your students will actually apply the grammar lessons and concepts to their writing. The Hub shop has years worth of grammar bundles that your students will actually apply to their writing.

Mentor sentences use sentences from popular middle grade and young adult novels.

The grammar resources include 9 weeks each of digital and print versions of: Mentor sentences for each week, examples and possible answers for each day of the week, teacher lessons and interactive notebooks lessons with all examples and answer keys, weekly assessments (self-grading in Google Forms option), projection slides, and worksheet or interactive notebook option for each week's sentence.

⏰ CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT...

The middle school ELA bell ringers were designed as a classroom management tool that review important ELA concepts daily. I give you tips and tricks for how to make them quick daily or weekly grades for teachers who have gradebook entry requirements.

Each bell ringer bundle reviews and teaches students ELA concepts like root words, affixes, grammar concepts, vocabulary words, inferences, and foreign phrases.

Because the bell ringers were designed to be an easy review or quick check for students, the teacher can spend those first minutes of class taking attendance or just catching their breath.

❤️ THE SUPPORT SYSTEM

If there was one thing that would have been the difference maker during my really tough year in middle school ELA, it would have been other teachers who JUST.GET.IT.

The Hungry Teacher's Hub Exclusive Facebook group was designed with exactly that idea in mind.

Having support and a place to ask questions while using and implementing any of the resources will be an important component of your success. Even more so, the group will serve as your space to help, support, and encourage each other in all aspects of teaching middle school ELA.

📓 THE TEACHER TRAININGS

As an upper elementary self-contained teacher turned middle school ELA teacher, I learned first-hand (through mistakes and a lot of trial-and-error) what middle school ELA teachers really need.

The trainings added to your membership library will be focused on what you actually need help with: how to actually get all your grading done in class, how to teach in a way that gets students writing quality and quantity – and the results to prove it- and how to realistically implement things like small groups and literature circles in a middle school ELA classroom.

As members, your input is valuable to us, and as we see teachers asking for guidance and support in certain areas, trainings will be developed to support you.

Before The Hungry Teacher's Hub Membership I was new to teaching ELA for middle school, and I was very overwhelmed. I needed a lot of time to prep and plan, especially since ELA has a lot of standards and multiple subjects to teach. I have been able to reduce (and close to eliminate!) my planning time as all the resources are already provided. I can pick and choose from the bell ringers, mentor sentences, and writing activities to do for the day. My students have also been writing a lot more than they used to, and I’m able to give feedback sooner. No surprises, but I love how organized it is!

-Carmela Davidson, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade teacher

My worst year of teaching ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me...

In my most recent years of teaching middle school ELA, my students increased their volume of writing from a few sentences each day to almost two pages daily, and their reading volume went from basically nothing to finishing multiple novels during each 3-4 week unit.

Their ELA proficiency test scores increased from 10% to 80% proficiency in just my first two years of teaching.

Despite that huge increase in their reading and writing volume quantity and quality, I literally never brought any grading home.

But it wasn’t always this way.

Prior to teaching seventh and eighth grade ELA, I had been in a sixth grade ELA position that just about had me leave teaching altogether.

My sixth grade students hated reading, produced very little writing, and had minimal stamina or motivation during any of our district and state tests.

I was given a scripted curriculum to "improve student test scores" and it was making my students HATE reading and writing more than before.

I was required to be part of a new teacher training cohort that had to submit lesson plans and would also "improve" and support my teaching, when really it was a time-suck that added even more work to my already-full plate.

I now had triple the amount of students (and grading) than I'd ever experienced. My new school's plan and prep time was half of what I had in my previous school.

We were all bored, I was completely burnt-out by October, and my classroom management was basically just a survival-mode strategy.

I kept wishing that I had a magical solution that would give me useful support and teaching resources that were engaging, flexible, practical and actually helped my students improve.

If they had helped with classroom management, I would have called it the magical unicorn of teaching.

It was my toughest year of teaching, but I always say it was the best thing that ever happened to me because....

That really tough year had me creating my own resources and strategies that did all the things mentioned above. I switched jobs to a 6th-8th grade ELA position.

...And I started creating the Hungry Teacher Hub ELA Teachers Membership.

It has everything I wished I'd had during that really tough year. Some of it was even created during that first year, as I learned first-hand what types of resources, units, and support middle school ELA teachers really needed.

Meet Martina

I have a B.S. in K-6 Elementary Education and Masters of Science in Reading and English.

I was a fifth-grade self-contained teacher for three years and a middle school ELA teacher for six years.

When I made the switch to middle school ELA, I went from 24 students to 150 students and needed practical and realistic teaching and planning strategies that also got me results.

Middle school ELA students still need a lot of scaffolding, step-by-step teaching, and TONS of examples for them to begin to apply their learning. I begin creating resources and units that had all these elements and my students’ ELA proficiency test scores increased 70% in just two years.

I know that it’s important for you to have resources and strategies that are easy for you to implement, but I also know that teachers want to see that those resources and strategies are effective.

These resources and strategies have been used for six years in my middle school ELA classroom, and now you have access to them as well.

This Is NOT For:

  • Upper elementary teachers. I love my fifth grade teachers friends, but this membership was designed to really meet the needs of middle school ELA teachers.

Before The Hungry Teacher's Hub Membership lines blurred, time was shared, overlapped, and twisted together. I am just beginning to implement the meetings and follow the format, but I love the calm I feel knowing everything is basically done and I just have to re-type everything into my district's lesson plan template. I have not brought one thing home this year to do. I can get everything done during my school hours! The amount of stuff you get!! There's is just so much! All the files, the videos, the examples, the guidance - wow.

-Jennifer Bermudez, 6th Grade ELA teacher

Before The Hungry Teacher's Hub Membership I was a veteran teacher of 25 years who was new to 6th, 7th, & 8th grade reading. I had nothing. But now I not only have the tools, I have new knowledge and understanding of standards and unit building! I have ready to use units. I am not spending hours creating plans. Everything I need is at my fingertips. I have been so grateful for the wealth of units and resources are incredible!

-Berta Hartzell, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ELA Teacher

Before The Hungry Teacher's Hub Membership I was an elementary school teacher (K-2) before I joined you all. I have been extremely successful in middle school with your help. I cannot imagine how I would have done without you guys! You all have given me my planning time back. Since I am not stressed about finding materials or worrying about getting things together for the next unit I am able to put all of my energy into intervention. As an Intensive Reading teacher, this gives me the structure I require to keep things well managed, but also the freedom to work on individual goals. I love the quality and quantity of resources available to me!

-Alicia Duhon, 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade ELA teacher
